What is Tapping?
Tapping is also known as EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique). It is a powerful holistic healing
technique that resolves a range of issues. It's based on the combined principles of ancient
Chinese acupressure and modern psychology.
The basic Tapping technique requires you to focus on a negative emotion at hand. This can be a
fear, a worry, a bad memory, or any unresolved problem. You do this while maintaining your
mental focus on this issue. Then you use your fingertips to tap 5-7 times on 9 specific meridian
points of the body.
Tapping on these meridian endpoints, while addressing the root cause of distress, sends a
calming signal to the brain. This allows you to feel relaxed and in control.
Tapping Regulates the Nervous System, Boosts the Immune System
Tapping Calms the Brain and Boosts Brainpower
Tapping Eliminates Stress and Anxiety
Tapping also puts the body back into the parasympathetic (relaxation) nervous system response.
This allows the immune system, digestive system, reproductive system, and endocrine system to
function as it should.
Have you ever noticed that you get great ideas when you're in the shower? Want to know why? It's
because your amygdala was calm and you were accessing the full resources of your brain. Luckily
research shows that when we Tap we send a calming signal to the amygdala in the brain, letting
it know that it's safe to relax!
Above all, Tapping reduces stress and anxiety, allowing us to simply feel better every day. This
leads us to do better at work, lose weight more easily, boost our immune system so our health
improves, improve relationships, improve our confidence... essentially ALL the areas of our life
are lifted!

What is Tapping?Tapping is a scientifically-backed brain-rewiring
technique, where cutting-edge neuroscience meets ancient wisdom. This method is a
combination of modern psychology and traditional acupressure techniques.
It's a practical, easy-to-use tool that works on the amygdala, directly targeting the brain's
stress response. It calms the nervous system, helping us respond to daily challenges with
greater peace and ease.
Tapping involves using your fingertips to gently tap on certain acupressure points, while
focusing on what is distressing you and repeating certain phrases.
You can learn more about the basics of Tapping here. How does Tapping work?Tapping actually works on a physiological level to
create changes in both the brain and body.
Tapping directly targets the amygdala, the part of your brain that's like the alarm
system for stress, fear, and all kinds of emotional responses. When you tap on specific
acupressure points during Tapping, you're essentially calming down and ‘turning off' this alarm
system. The process sends calming signals to the amygdala, rewiring how we respond to the
stressors and challenges of daily life.
When we're stressed, our brain acts like it's in danger. Tapping helps remind our brain that
everything is okay and it can relax.
This allows us to calm the nervous system andrewire neural patterns, creating a
balanced, regulated internal environment where we can feel better and notice dramatic changes in
our lives.

Is there any scientific evidence supporting Tapping?Tapping isn't a miracle cure or some woo-woo
technique. It is a scientifically-backed tool – a method that's been honed by
therapists and experts over years and years to become the effective, proven technique we
know today.
There are now over 300 scientific studies demonstrating the effectiveness of Tapping,
and that number is growing by the year!
Go here
to learn more about some of these fascinating studies on Tapping. Is Tapping supported by mental health professionals or doctors?Tapping was first developed by psychotherapists,
and it has continued to be used and promoted by mental health professionals all over the
world in the decades since.
Many world-renowned therapists, coaches, and even doctors use Tapping in their
practices to support the mental and physical wellbeing of their clients and patients.
Is Tapping suitable for everyone?Yes! Tapping is great for people of all ages, and
can be suitable for a variety of different concerns.
Tapping has been shown to help with everything from insomnia in seniors to academic
performance in kids. It is a safe, non-invasive technique that has wide-ranging
benefits.
Please note: If you are dealing with any new symptoms or a known physical or mental health
condition, we do recommend you work with a medical professional. When used alongside proper
medical care as a complementary tool, Tapping can offer added support and make a big
difference! Can children use Tapping?Tapping is an excellent tool for kids! It is super
simple to do, and kids tend to pick it up really quickly!
Tapping has been shown to have numerous benefits for children, including:
Reduce anxiety
Boost self-confidence
Improve focus and concentration
Enhance academic performance
Sleep better
And more
Schools and parents nationwide are using this proven technique to help kids overcome stress
and become more calm and confident.
We have an entire section in our The Tapping Solution App dedicated to content for kids. We
even have video sessions for kids led by other kids, to make the process even more
fun and easy.
That being said, if the Tapping technique ever brings up emotions or experiences that feel
too big or overwhelming to process on your own, we recommend working with a psychotherapist
who is trained in this technique. Getting the support of a professional will allow you to
explore any intense feelings or experiences in a safe space with proper, expert guidance.
You can find a list of Tapping practitioners here.
How does Tapping compare to traditional therapy?Whereas traditional therapy focuses solely on the
mind, Tapping is a unique technique that is a true mind-body approach.
Tapping, a combination of modern psychology and ancient acupressure, simultaneously
addresses stress on both the physical AND emotional levels.
As Dr. Dawson Church, a pioneer in Tapping research puts it, Tapping "gives you the best of
both worlds, body and mind, like getting a massage during a psychotherapy session."
It's incredibly powerful to combine psychology techniques like addressing limiting beliefs
or saying empowering affirmations with the physical component of Tapping, which sends
calming signals to the brain and body.
When your body is in a relaxed, regulated state, so much more is possible, and the healing
opportunities are endless.
What differentiates Tapping from other forms of meditation? Many people report that Tapping is the first
technique that has ever worked for them, when traditional meditation methods have proven
challenging or ineffective.
Unlike in other forms of meditation, Tapping doesn't ask you to clear or quiet your
mind and just sit there peacefully.
Instead, Tapping allows you to acknowledge whatever might be bothering you. It gives space
for you to say "I'm stressed!" or "I'm sad about ___." or "I can't stop thinking about what
that person said to me..."
Tapping on the meridian points (the same used in acupressure) while you think about what is
causing you stress helps your mind understand that you are not in any physical danger and it
is safe to relax, reducing cortisol levels.
Tapping is an active meditative practice, one that utilizes the mind-body connection to help
you stay engaged and do deeply healing work. It can help you access emotions that are stuck
in your body, process long-held pain, and shift your thought patterns.
Tapping isn't just a stress relief technique. It's not just about getting calm and quiet.
It's about addressing the root causes of the issues that have been holding you back for
years, so you can finally move forward feeling more free and empowered.
Tapping is simple and easy to learn; users frequently report how surprisingly easy this tool
is to master! You can get the hang of it after just one session.

Where and when can I Tap?
Anytime, and anywhere! One of the best things about Tapping is that it is so practical, and
you can do it literally whenever you need it, no matter the circumstances.
Tapping is literally at your fingertips and can be put into practice
in the moment, wherever and whenever you need it most,
At work and feeling stressed? Do a few minutes of Tapping at your desk.
At a party and feeling social anxiety creep in? Head to the bathroom and do some
Tapping!
Upset after a difficult conversation with your partner? Take some time to cool down
with Tapping.
On an airplane and getting anxious about flying? You can tap from your seat, and no
one even has to notice.
You can tap several times per day, or once a week – whatever works for you!
We do recommend committing to a daily practice, so that you can get in the habit of
using this tool regularly. Some people like to start their day with Tapping in the morning,
and many others like to do it as the last thing before bed.
Listening to your body is a great way to know how much tapping is right for you.
If you are feeling rested and calm, then great! Keep Tapping! But if you are feeling like
your body is exhausted and worn out and you could use a break, then it might be time to rest
up. No one knows you better than you. Trust your gut and listen to your body.
And if you do tap often, just make sure to take good care of yourself. The emotional
shifts can be a lot to process, so stay hydrated, rest, and practice self-care.
How long does it take to see results from Tapping?
This varies from person to person! Some people notice dramatic changes after just one
session of Tapping. For others, the improvements come more gradually, adding up over time.
Either way, consistent, committed practice is key. The results will
come. Be patient, be kind to yourself, and be open to the shifts that are
coming your way.
The points that we tap on are found along the body’s meridians. You can learn
all about meridians and the Tapping points here.

How does Tapping affect the brain?
You might have heard about the calming effects of Tapping, but did you know that it actually
changes your brain?
The science on Tapping suggests that Tapping can alter brain activity and rewire your brain!
It specifically calms activity in the amygdala (our brain’s stress center, controlling our
fight-or-flight response). This helps us feel more cool and collected – even in the face of
things that used to feel stressful.
Research studies show Tapping influences specific areas of the brain related to:
-Emotional processing
-Pain
-Cravings
-And that’s just the start!
It’s like having a 'reset’ button for your brain, right at your fingertips! When you
Tap, you are rewiring neural patterns and creating a calm, regulated internal
environment.
This allows you to…
Let go of old pain, past traumas, and blocks
Interrupt old thought patterns and limiting beliefs
Heal from ongoing health issues
Respond in a brand new way to life’s ups and downs
Pilot studies that suggest Tapping may positively affect over 70 genes implicated in
overall health
The fascinating part of this is that the genes that appear to be affected by Tapping are
known to be linked to immunity, inflammation, neuronal processes in the brain, and stress
regulation.
Tapping seems to affect these genes in a very favorable way. For example, genes involved in
immunity were upregulated, while genes involved in inflammation were downregulated.

What does 0 to 10 mean when you ask me to rate the intensity?
Before and after a Tapping session in the app, we will often prompt you to rate the
intensity of your experience on a 0 to 10 scale. This will help you to see if there are
any changes in how you feel from before to after the Tapping.
The 0 to 10 scale allows you to give a number to how you are feeling, with 10 being the
highest and 0 being the lowest. If you are rating your stress, for example, a 10 would be
the most stress you can imagine, while a 0 would be no stress at all and you are feeling
completely calm and relaxed.
If your intensity levels aren’t going down, it may just mean you need to keep repeating the
Tapping, or to explore other layers of what is going on for you. Keep experimenting, keep
exploring new topics, and keep Tapping!Do you have content in languages other than English?

Can Tapping help me… manage my stress?
Yes! Tapping is a powerful stress relief technique. This is because Tapping sends calming
signals to the brain and turns down the brain’s “fight-or-flight” stress response.
Studies
have actually shown that Tapping can decrease cortisol (the stress hormone) levels by
43% after just one hour of practice.
The process of tapping on the acupressure points while speaking or thinking about your stressors
helps your brain to understand that you are not in any real physical danger, and that you are
safe to relax. This disrupts the pattern of chronic stress that we so often fall into,
allowing the brain to rewire and find a more productive, appropriate response to the challenges
that come our way.
As a stress relief tool, Tapping is effective and fast. In a matter
of minutes, you can go from feeling totally overwhelmed to feeling calm, balanced, and at ease.
It can work faster, and have longer lasting effects, than other (also wonderful and useful)
tools like deep breathing, meditation, yoga, and so on.
You can read all about how Tapping works to relieve stress here.

Can Tapping help me… sleep better?
Yes! Tapping is a great tool to use before bed to help you drift off into deep, restful,
uninterrupted sleep.
Research has shown that Tapping can decrease activity in the amygdala, the part of your
brain responsible for responding to stress. It helps to switch off the “fight-or-flight”
response and activate the “rest-and-digest” response, which prepares our bodies for
sleep and puts us into a state of being where sleep can come easily.
When done regularly before bedtime, Tapping can help you create a healthy sleep routine and
signal to your body that it’s time to wind down and prepare for rest.
Additionally, when you use Tapping throughout the day to address stress and release strong
emotions, you set yourself up for better sleep later on when it’s finally time for your head
to hit the pillow.

Can Tapping help me… lose weight?
Yes! Tapping is an extremely powerful tool for creating lasting change. And that includes
aiding in weight loss efforts!
Tapping can help us release stress, process stuck emotions, create healthy habits, find
motivation to stick with change, establish loving relationships with our bodies, and so much
more.
Research
has found that after people learn Tapping, they lose weight, no longer have as
intense of food cravings, show more restraint around food, and gain freedom from emotional
eating. One
study even found that Tapping alters brain activity in areas related to food
cravings.
The best part is that Tapping leads to long-term, sustainable changes. It’s not about
a quick win or losing a bunch of weight fast only to gain it back a little while later.
For starters, Tapping creates positive changes in our physiology, such as reducing
cortisol levels. As we tap, our body can relax, inflammation can go down, muscles tension
can release, and so on. And all of this can help with pain!
Tapping also helps us address the mind-body connection and uncover the root causes of our
pain. Tapping provides a way for us to release stress and strong emotions from our
physical bodies, which may be affecting us without us even realizing it.
You can read all about the connections between stress, strong emotions, and pain (plus, how
Tapping can help) here.
We’ve heard from thousands of people over the years that Tapping is the one thing that
finally helped them break free from even the most stubborn forms of chronic pain.
And there’s research
to back this up; studies show that Tapping can reduce pain levels AND reduce how
much pain affects us emotionally. One
study even found that Tapping alters brain networks involved in pain. How cool is
that?
Many
different studies have been conducted on a wide variety of groups of people with
depression – from college students to postmenopausal women to healthcare workers. They have
found over and over again that Tapping makes a big difference and is an effective way to
support depression.
One
study found an average reduction in depression symptoms of 41% when people
used Tapping.
When it comes to depression, Tapping can be of benefit from all different angles. For
example, it can be used to:
Address difficult experiences or traumas from the past, helping you to let go of
unresolved emotions.
Release strong emotions like hopelessness, discontent, grief, or anxiety.
Boost energy, focus, productivity, and motivation.
Increase your confidence, self-compassion, sense of self-worth, and more.

Yes! You’d be surprised just how many positive changes you’ll see in your relationships when
you use Tapping to release stress and pent up emotions, find more clarity within yourself,
and approach the world from a more grounded and regulated place.
We all bring a mess of emotions, beliefs, hurt, and trauma into our relationships. And so do
the people we are in relationship with. Tapping can help you dissolve limiting beliefs,
release heavy emotions, and connect with yourself – so that you can lovingly connect with
the people you care about.
Tapping can be used after an argument to help you release resentment and get back to a place
where you can think clearly and work through solutions with your partner. It can be used to
help you feel more empowered and confident to have a difficult conversation with your boss
at work. It can be used to help you release annoyance at a family member, so you can open
back up to focusing on the love you share.
Ultimately, Tapping helps us show up to our relationships from a calm and centered place,
where we can resolve the obstacles that are holding our relationships back.

A 2019 study showed that
after just a 4-day Tapping workshop, craving levels went down by 74%. Amazing, right?
Tapping helps you to uncover what is really behind your cravings, so that you can
address the emotional drivers that lead you to head to the pantry for a sweet treat or reach
for a cigarette, or whatever it might be.
With Tapping, you can release the stress, the anxiety, the worry, the limiting beliefs that
might be keeping you stuck in unhealthy habits, allowing you to finally break free from
old patterns and make more empowered choices.
And it turns out that Tapping actually creates changes in the brain, altering how your brain
responds to cravings! A
study from Bond University suggests that the brain actually rewires after Tapping,
and that Tapping reduces activation in areas of the brain associated with cravings.

The science behind Tapping shows us that Tapping calms down the brain and body, helping to
soothe the nervous system and rewire the brain.
When you are scared, your brain activates fight-or-flight mode. But when you practice
Tapping, it sends a calming signal to the brain letting it know it is safe to relax and that
it no longer has to be ready for fight or flight. Tapping essentially rewires the brain’s
connections, telling it that we are not in any real danger, and that it is safe to let
go of the fear.
If you want something that works well and that works FAST, then Tapping is worth a try!
In fact, many
studies have found that Tapping can greatly decrease fears after just one session
– sometimes after just a few minutes!
Ready to give it a try for yourself? Whether you are dealing with a fear of flying,
claustrophobia, or another fear, The Tapping Solution App has got you covered. Explore one
of the many topics in our Fears and Phobias Category today!
Can Tapping help me… improve my athletic performance?
Yes! Tapping has been used for a very long time by athletes – including many professional
athletes.
But it wasn’t until the last decade or two that scientific research began to catch up with
what many athletes already know: Tapping for athletic performance really can work wonders to
up your game!
Studies
have now documented benefits like increasing free throw performance in basketball players
and improving goal scoring attempts in soccer players.
It’s no secret that alongside the physical abilities that are required of athletes,
there’s a big mental component, too. It is vitally important for athletes to learn
to stay calm, relaxed, centered, and confident before and during big events – even when the
stakes are high!
That’s where Tapping comes in. Tapping is an evidence-based method known to calm down the
brain and body, helping us relax, release distress, and boost our confidence.

In The Tapping Solution App, we’ve got an entire Sports Performance Category dedicated to
this purpose. It was created in collaboration with 3-Time MLB All-Star and former New
York Yankees hitting coach Sean Casey.
